I believe in the power of teaching theatre.
I believe in the power it has to help us discover about ourselves, to empathize deeply with anyone we meet, and to listen deeply to the person in front of us. I also believe in the power that theatre has to change the world.
What I don’t believe is the false dichotomy that theatre education can be either caring or rigorous, either progressive or professional. Theatre pedagogy that is focussed on student wellbeing, that forwards the voices that have been silenced, and that is constantly looking for the student that is being damaged, is the key to creating the theatre ecology we hope to leave for the next generation.
